Old Man Winter has arrived with a vengeance. It is COLD! I’m in Alabama and I know I don’t have it nearly as bad as some of you. I know that if it’s this cold here, it is terrible in other States. My prayers are with you and your family. Bundle up and stay warm!
Please don’t forget about our four-legged babies. It is too cold for them to be outside.
If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Please bring them inside.
Here are just a few winter weather tips to keep in mind for our fur-babies.
- Keep Pets Inside. Longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as Huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather, but no pet should be left outside for long periods of time in below-freezing weather. Once you do let them out, remember that melting salt can dry out paws, so make sure you wipe them off with a warm cloth.
- Make Some Noise! A warm vehicle engine can be an appealing heat source for outdoor and feral cats, but it’s also deadly. Check underneath your car, bang on the hood, and honk the horn before staring the engine to encourage feline hitchhikers to abandon their roost under the hood.
- Dress Them For The Weather. If your dog has a short coat, or seems bothered by the cold weather, consider a sweater or dog coat. You may also want to consider booties to protect their feet.
- Shelter. This is the most important. If at all possible, PLEASE bring them inside. If you are unable to keep your dog inside during cold weather, provide them with a warm, dry, solid shelter against wind. Remember that your baby needs fresh (unfrozen) water to process food and burn calories to stay warm. If you’re able to, consider providing shelters for stray cats in the neighborhood.
- Disaster/Emergency Kit. Include your four-legged babies in your disaster/emergency kit in case of blizzards and power outages. Have enough food, water and medicine (including prescription medications as well as heart worm and flea/tick preventives) on hand to get through at least 5 days.
Our babies love us unconditionally and they depend on us to take care of them. Please love them like they love you and bring them inside during cold weather.
