Hugs Matter!
Research shows that hugging is effective at healing or lessening sickness, loneliness, depression, anxiety and stress. And in our stressful world, we could use a lot of hugs to make our homes, our schools, our places of worship and our workplaces less stressful. Don’t you agree?
As human beings, we tend to “feel” nurtured when we are hugged. The nurturing touch of a hug builds trust and gives you a feeling of peace and safety. A lot of times, you don’t even realize the stress you are holding in until it is released when someone hugs you.
Hugs can boost oxytocin levels which lessen or heal feelings of loneliness, isolation and anger. And holding a hug for an extended period increases serotonin levels which leads to greater happiness. Some researchers even say that hugs can strengthen the immune system by regulating and balancing the body’s production of white blood cells, which keep you healthy and disease free.
Hugging boosts self-esteem, relaxes muscles, balances out the nervous system, teaches us how to give and receive, and teaches us to let go.
I think, for me, the most important thing about hugging is the investment it makes into the relationship you have with the person you are hugging. When you hug someone, you are telling them that you love them, that you understand and that you have empathy for them. Is there anything of more significance that can be said to anyone? I don’t think so. Hugging tells each person being hugged that they matter, that their feelings matter, that they are not alone.

Love those hugs and with the coronovirus pandemic, it’s the only way I can hug my family and grandchildren. Thanks for the rays of sunshine at this stormy time
