It is well…WITH MY SOUL…

May 11, 2015 By Charity M. Richey-Bentley Leave a Comment

It is well…with my soul…
I hope you’ve had a wonderful Mother’s Day.  There are so many words to describe my day.  I guess the one that is most fitting is ‘fulfilling’.  I had a very fulfilling day.  Emotionally and spiritually fulfilling way down deep in my soul. ☺
Typically, my mother and daddy come to our home for dinner on Mother’s Day.  I would go all out.  Cook twenty dishes and, if the weather was good, serve it on the front porch.  Or, if too hot, we’d serve it in the sunroom.  Today, we did it a little differently.  Dwight and I went to Church with Mother and Daddy and we took them to lunch at a landmark restaurant in Pell City, Alabama.  Good ‘ol, down-home, country cooking that is hard to find in a lot of areas.  Our lunch was great.  Back to the Church service…
I expected the sermon to be about women.  After all, it was Mother’s Day.  But, today I had a sermon delivered in such a way that…well, it was fulfilling.
The sermon was titled “Women of God” and it was about four very important women in The Bible: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba.
Tamar married into the Tribe of Judah.  However, she remained childless.  She tricked her father-in-law and became pregnant by him.  She gave birth to twin sons.  And at that time having twin sons was a sign of high favor by God. One of these sons was an ancestor of King David.
Rahab was a pagan prostitute with a past.  Lots of baggage.  But she was put into the tribe of Judah and was in the direct lineage of Jesus Christ.  Rahab had a son, Boaz.
Ruth was a stranger in Naomi’s land.  But God gives her favor in the sight of Boaz.  God redeems her with marriage to Boaz.
Bathsheba is a mystery.  Her relationship with David started in adultery.  David married her which gave her rank and influence.  She is the mother of Solomon.  Thanks to her and Nathan, Solomon’s appointment to King was assured.  It was Bathsheba who convinced David to follow God’s plan.
All of these women were flawed.  All of these women had a lot of baggage.  All of these women were imperfect.  All of these women had done things they wished they had never done.  All of these women made mistakes.  But they are all in the lineage of Jesus Christ.
They are all like me.  They are all like you.
Yes, I have a past.  Don’t we all? I have tons of baggage…more baggage than an airport. J  And I’ve done things that I wished I had never done—made mistakes that have hurt both myself and others.  And, yes, sure, if I had a do-over, I’d make sure that I did some things differently.  But, we don’t get any do-overs.  There is no reset button on this thing called “Life”.
But, you know what?  I am at peace.  My journey is full of lessons and growth—growth as a woman, as a human being and as a spiritual being.  I know without a shadow of doubt that I have been forgiven.  And I have forgiven myself for my flaws, my mistakes, my imperfections and all the baggage I bring.
It is well…WITH MY SOUL…
Blessings to you!
