Remembering our Loved Ones who are in Heaven this Thanksgiving.
I have several loved ones in heaven who, since their passing, Holidays haven’t been the same. I have an uncle, brother-in-law and my beloved grandmother who have all passed on.
Thanksgiving has always been a wonderful time for our family. We were all together each and every Thanksgiving. My grandmother, mother and us four girls never missed a Thanksgiving together. Not once. And we usually had people who visited with us, ate with us and bonded with us.
And the two people who made everything so special at Thanksgiving were my mother and grandmother. My mother, thank God, is still with us. But my grandmother left this earth in 2005. Heaven gained a beautiful angel the day we lost her. I have missed her and thought of her every day and I know I will miss her for the rest of my life.
Mother and mama (our name for my grandmother) would cook for days. We would have turkey and dressing, ham, sweet potato casserole, green beans (fresh from the farm), peas (fresh from the farm), creamed potatoes, gravy, slaw, cornbread, salads, deviled eggs, corn (fresh from the farm) (and corn casserole) and every kind of bean that was made. And mama was famous for her pecan pies and cakes. And she always outdid herself each year. The texture and consistency of the pecan pie filling in her pies were something I have never been able to achieve–even though I watched her do it over and over again.
I’m sure she is up in Heaven each Thanksgiving saying, “No, that’s not the way you do the cornbread for the dressing,” or “Don’t let that gravy boil too long”. Smiling.
I am so thankful to have been born into the family that I was born into. No, we weren’t perfect. We had a lot of hard times. But, we made it through the hard times because of Mother and Mama’s never-ending love and guidance.
Mama, we’re remembering and honoring you this Thanksgiving!
Sending you blessings of love and gratitude from Sterrett, Alabama!
