Viva Las Vegas!
We’re out in Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and, as always, I am most excited about the barrel racing. I truly admire these athletes, both woman and horse. They make it look so easy, so effortless, but of course, it actually takes years of practice to hone your skill and it takes something special to make it to the NFR. Only the best of the best make it here and they never disappoint.
A standout for me this year is Nellie Miller out of Cottonwood, California. Last night she rode Rafter W Minnie Reba (“Sister”) to a time of 13.64 seconds to win the round and set the Round 1 record time.
Traveling the continent to compete in rodeos is tough for anyone. Some would say that trying to have a normal life as a barrel racer is practically impossible. But Nellie makes it work.
You see, Nellie is different from many of the competitors in that she has two young daughters, ages 5 and 2. Most women in rodeo either have older kids or they don’t have kids yet. With such a tough life on the road, there aren’t many who decide to take their kids with them. But Nellie does and she has great support from family members who are on the road with her.
Does she have to work harder to make it all work? Yes! But isn’t that what all winners do?
I’m thinking Nellie and Sister are going to win it all. Sister knows her job and she does it well. They both want the World Championship and her family, including her two young daughters, are cheering her on!
Sending you blessings of love and light from Las Vegas, Nevada!
