Easter – Wonderful Childhood Memories & A Day for Rejoicing!

Easter – Wonderful Childhood Memories & A Day for Rejoicing!

Easter has always been a special time for me and my family.  Growing up, there were six women in our home.  My grandmother, Jewell Kathryn Wilcox Wiggins, my mother, Janet S. Betz and me and my three sisters, Faith, Hope and Joy.  Yes, those names are the real names of my sisters. 🙂

Each year, our Easter Sunday revolved around Church.  The resurrection of Christ was the reason for Easter celebration, but inside our home, inside our family, Easter was such a special time.  I can look back on my childhood years and pick out those times that further bonded us as a family, helped solidify the ties that will always bind us.  Each year’s Easter did that for me…

All four girls got new clothes and shoes to wear to Church and we always wore them the next week to school.  And when I say ‘new clothes’, I mean that my grandmother had sewn every stitch that all of us wore.  She made something for each of the four girls, mother and herself each Easter.  She made all of our clothes until she was unable to see well enough to sew.

There aren’t too many people that can say that they never wore anything store-bought until they left for college, but I am one of them.  And you know what?  We were the best dressed kids in Church, in school or anywhere else we went.  Everybody always wanted to know where we bought our clothes.  And when we told them that Mama (our name for our Grandmother) made them, they wanted her to make them something too.  🙂

And, ooooohhhh, the Easter baskets.  Mother hid our baskets late on Saturday night and we had to find them on Sunday morning. And they were always so wonderful, full of eggs, candies and little goodies.  And Martha Stewart ain’t got nothing on my mother and grandmother.  Our eggs had those shabby, beautiful colors 45 years ago! LOL!

I am fortunate and blessed to still have my mother.  Easter is still special for us.  We lost my beloved grandmother in 2005.  She was 95.  I miss her everyday, think about her everyday, but I know that she is with The Lord.   I know that the angels rejoiced when she joined them.  She is probably sewing their clothes.  🙂
