Beatrice is a beautiful 16-year-old British Shire. She recently and suddenly became ill with a horrible case of equine colic. Colic is a very dangerous and serious condition which causes the horse to experience extreme pain in the abdomen. It can and often results in death.
Horses that exhibit signs of colic are restless, pawing at the ground, and rolling around on the ground. They can also have an elevated pulse rate and their breathing rate increases. These signs from a horse signal that something is very wrong. Immediate action must be taken.
It is extremely important to get the horse up off the ground, as the longer the horse stays down, the more likely the horse can go into organ failure.
Beatrice’s owners, Donald and Jane MacIntyre, with the help of four strong farmhands tried everything in their power to get Beatrice up. This was a very difficult job. Beatrice is a big girl, weighing 1 ton!
They created a pulley system using their tractor and huge pulling straps, but Beatrice wasn’t budging! They tried and tried to lift her for over six hours. They were becoming more and more worried for Beatrice’s health.
Any animal lover dreads the thought of having to put their animal down by humanely euthanizing them, but Beatrice was suffering so badly. She was in great pain and it wouldn’t be fair to allow her to continue on this way. They left her and went in to call the vet. When they came back out, they began tending to their other horses.
The MacIntyre’s also have an 11-year-old horse, Beau. He is Beatrice’s best buddy. When the MacIntyre’s turned him out, he didn’t run off to the pasture as he would normally do. He knew something was wrong and he immediately went over to Beatrice’s side. Beau showed the most beautiful love and affection toward Beatrice as he started pulling and tugging at her head and neck. Within a matter of minutes, Beatrice was up on all four!
It took Beau’s caring touch to get his best buddy back up on her feet and moving again.
The MacIntyre’s watched and caught this beautiful moment on film. They assisted with getting her steadily to her feet and quickly moved her to the yard to keep her active. Sometimes human intervention cannot do what the love of their own can do.
Beatrice has made a full recovery and Beau never leaves her side! Beatrice knows she has a true friend till the end. It is amazing how animals communicate with each other, their instincts kick in and they know just what to do! Beatrice and Beau have a bond between each other that will last forever.
