Olivia Newton-John has revealed she is again battling cancer, her third diagnosis in three decades. She said in a recent interview that she is treating the cancer with “modern” medicines and natural remedies.
The Grease actress, who faced breast cancer in 1992, secretly fought a reemergence of the same disease in her shoulder in 2013. And now she is revealing that in 2017, doctors discovered that the breast cancer had returned and metastasized to the base of her spine.
Born in 1948, in Cambridge, England, Olivia Newton-John was raised in Melbourne, Australia. Newton-John, who will turn 70 in a few weeks, was catapulted to fame when she starred opposite actor John Travolta in the high school musical “Grease.” Before that–in the mid 1970s–Newton-John made a splash in the United States with her third solo album. The song, “Let Me Be There,” from that album won her the Grammy Award for best country female vocal performance–her first. More awards and successful albums followed. She scored hits on the country and pop charts with “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “I Honestly Love You,” which won the 1974 Grammy Award for record of the year.
Grease made Newton-John an international star. Set in the 1950s, the film told the story of two teenagers in love from two different social worlds. Newton-John play the squeaky clean Sandy opposite John Travolta in the role of Danny, a rough-around-the-edges, but tender greaser. It became one of the most successful musicals in movie history.
Her next movie, Xanadu, bombed, but the soundtrack did well. She hit the charts again with “Magic.” Her next album, Physical, featured the hit single, “Let’s Get Physical.” She continued making albums, but her musical career quieted down.
She was set to tour the United States with her new album, “Live On”, but she was forced to cancel due to the third cancer diagnosis.
My husband’s always there, and he’s always there to support me, and I believe I will win over it and that’s my goal. ~Olivia Newton-John
She says that she doesn’t allow herself to dwell on the fear:
I don’t go there. I’d be lying if I said I never go there. There are moments, I’m human. So if I allow myself to go there, I could easily create that, you know, big fear. ~Olivia Newton-John
Please keep Olivia Newton-John in your prayers.
