My Visiting Deer…
I have bird feeders set up outside my office. I love watching the birds fly in, sit for a little bit, peck at the food and fly out again. Over the past few weeks, the birds have had to compete with a herd of deer that use my surrounding property on their daily run. There is usually about 10-12 of them that spend a little time on the back side of the property during the morning hours. Then, a few will make their way up to my bird feeders while the others keep a look out. They can’t see inside my office, but they can tell when I move because the light/shadow changes on the window pane and it scares them off a little bit. They wait for a few minutes and come back to the feeders.
It is amazing how they have worked together so that all of them get some of the feed. One usually shakes or nudges one of the feeders (top photo) to shake some of the feed onto the ground. Then, several of them eat for a few minutes. Then, several more will come in and the first ones move out. And so it goes until all have eaten and they make their way into the woods again.
I love to watch them…it is amazing that other animals have figured out how to live so that everyone benefits.
