All of us have our own perceptions of beauty. We see a beautiful face and we think, “Oh what a beautiful face”. Or we see a really fit, youthful body and we think, “They look so young and fit.” And sometimes our thinking is wistful. We long to be like them, to not have the age lines in our faces, to not have the extra ten pounds we seem to always carry around with us.
But we all know that a beautiful face and beautiful body can mask the real heart of the person. How many times have you thought someone was beautiful and realized later that their heart made them ugly? I’ve done it. Many times. And no matter how long they wear the masks, the truth–their real heart–eventually shines through.
Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart. ~Kahlil Gibran
We are constantly reminded by society’s perception of beauty. Every time we turn on the TV, go onto the internet, open a magazine or get in the car, we see exactly how much society cocoons us in a certain definition of “beauty”. Research tells us that eight of ten women are dissatisfied with their appearance.
But what about the heart? A beautiful, caring heart can bring more into a relationship, more into the world than any amount of money can buy. A good heart shows others love, compassion and understanding. Who you are as a person has nothing to do with your physical appearance. It’s all about what’s in the heart. Beauty is going to fade, but a good heart will always be a good heart!
