I had decided to pretty much stay out of any conversation regarding the Donald Sterling/LA Clippers scandal. But, I think it is important to talk about things that REALLY MATTER. AndI feel obligated that I should sometimes start these conversations. J
Sterling:
Maybe it is because I’m jaded, but Sterling’s comments about the African-American race did not surprise me. I have seen racism among all races of people. I have seen Caucasians who are racist against African-Americans, Hispanics, Mexicans and Jews. I have seen African-Americans who are racist against Caucasians, Hispanics, Mexicans and Jews. And now we have seen a very affluent, NBA team owner (who is also Jewish) who is racist against African-Americans, Mexicans and Hispanics. And the list goes on and on…
Racism exists among all groups of people. And racism exists among all levels of our society. There are racists among the most affluent, the highest ranking corporate executives, down to the most poverty-stricken, homeless members of our society. It was always there, but now racism has become the public face of Donald Sterling. It was always his face, just hidden below the surface. Donald Sterling is a racist. Period. He has hate and contempt for a group of people based on their skin color. And, the group of people who he hates and holds contempt for work for him and have been the major contributor to his 2 billion dollar net worth. I don’t know what can be done, if anything. He can’t be charged with racism, convicted and sent to prison for life. I don’t know the rules that govern the NBA. But something should be done. Somewhere in all this, there is a lesson for him. And, I believe that the lesson for him is one that all humanity could learn from.
The Wife: I had a brief conversation with a male friend about this. He made a comment about the wife which went something like this, “I feel sorry for his wife that she has been so humiliated.”
What?! This woman stayed in a marriage in which her husband disrespected her for years. She attended basketball games in which she sat with friends and her husband sat with his mistress. The affair was long-term and she knew about it and people feel sorry for her?
I saw on one of the news reports last night that she is suing the girlfriend because her husband gave the girlfriend marital assets (bought her stuff during the affair). I’ve never understood those women who want to fight the other woman when they catch their man with the other woman. It is the husband who is breaking the vows of YOUR MARRIAGE. You aren’t married to the other woman. Why go after her? I guess as long as it was a secret among the good folks of LA, it is ok. But once it goes up on the world wide web, you decide to sue the girlfriend? Really? Hello, you live in California, a 50% asset State. What about suing your husband for adultery, mental anguish, humiliation…etc. You would have gotten at least 50% of his assets. Instead you sue the girlfriend because he gave her cash, a condo, cars and other material possessions. What an example this sets for others. Where is the self-respect as a person, as a woman? She should have taken this man to the cleaners a long time ago…
The Girlfriend: On one of the news reports, the girlfriend can be heard saying, “OK, honey, I’ll remove all the black people from my instagram and I won’t bring them to the games.” Really?! Isn’t she half-black? She will deny her heritage to keep the bucks? She will treat people poorly, conform her behavior to keep her racist lover happy? For money? How weak. Where is the sense of self-worth? On one of the taped recordings, the girlfriend says to Sterling, “but I’m black and Mexican”. To which he replied, “yes, but …you look white”.
So, basically he says to her, I’ll have sex with you and buy you things as long as you deny who you are. As long as you pretend that you aren’t really black and you don’t have black friends and you don’t bring those black friends to my games.
And what did she do? Well, we all know what she did. She showed no self-respect, no character, no backbone. She kept the bucks. She denied her race and heritage to keep the money.
