We Are Given A Life

January 20, 2020 By Charity M. Richey-Bentley 31 Comments

Sometimes you may think that the life you were “given” was bad from the get-go, that you didn’t have a chance to make your life good.

But really, we are all given the same life. It’s what we do with it that makes it good or bad.

We are not given a good life or a bad life. We are given a life. It’s up to us to make it good or bad. ~Ward Foley

This quote assumes you’ve reached the age to make your own decisions and can shape your own life. You know right from wrong and you are capable of deciding what is “good” in the world and what is “bad”.

A lot of us start out with deficits as children. You may be born into poverty, abuse, absent parents and other situations that may be obstacles in your young life. But once you are able to make your own decisions, it’s up to you to make your life good or bad.

I saw a movie the other day about a young man who had grown up in a home of poverty and abuse. They had nothing as children. They had holes in the floor of their home, they rarely had a hot meal and their clothes were passed down from whatever families gave to the local Church.

On the day he turned 18, he walked to a local burger joint and asked for a job. The manager knew his mother and hired him. The manager gave him as many hours as he could. About 6 months after starting working, he asked if he could work as late at night as he could because he wanted to see if he could get a job with someone else early in the morning. When the manager asked him when he planned to sleep, he told him that he’d sleep between his two jobs. The manager knew he needed the money and gave him the late shift.

Before too long, he had saved up enough money for an apartment. He then got his mother and siblings away from his abusive father and moved them to the apartment. And then he worked. And he worked.

That was 45 years ago and he now heads up a major US Corporation. He took his life and made it good.

Whatever life you are given, take it and make it good.  Make it beautiful.

Sending you blessings from Sterrett, Alabama!

The phrase “life is what we make it” comes to mind.

Inspiring story. Thank you for sharing it! I’m 72 now and looking back, I probably would have made different changes in myself, but not in my life. I’m thankful for my husband and sons, and the ladies that are my daughters-in-law! And of course, my precious grandchildren! 💜

I understand about looking back and making changes. But you sound very happy.
And we can’t go back and change. We can only make changes for the better and
      move forward.
      God bless you.

I believe there are some unforeseen circumstances, but for the most part, we do make our life choices and must learn to live peaceably with those choices! Remember, you still have the choice to change your direction and your previous choices!

The life you have is only good as the Freedom you have been given. If you take that freedom away, then life itself becomes meaningless. We have our freedom thanks to many men that died so that we would enjoy it. We must protect our freedom and right now we are endangered with a path of Tyranny and authoritarian leadership in a midst at this moment. If the Senate rules to release our President of wrong doing without witnesses and documents, then we are doomed.

Being raised in a dysfunctional family environment, it was difficult when I first got married to create a home life that would be so much better than the life I had come from. Then, I read a book containing this phrase, “ For what I am today, shame on my past; but if I stay this way, shame on me.” That phrase, along with a close walk with Jesus, changed my life and filled it with hope. Your article is full of hope. Thank you.

Wanda, Our God is a mighty God. If you keep trying and trusting in Him, you will be surprised with the success you can achieve. God will bless you and He will go with you every step you take. Be sure not to take Him where he would not want to go.

In America, the possibilities for a good life are there. But to rise above the financial level you were born into is seldom easy.

A lovely story. Sadly some people come from a difficult background and don’t seem to have the ability to change their beginnings.
