I’m Getting Too Old

February 18, 2020 By Charity M. Richey-Bentley 16 Comments

My grandmother used to say, “Some people are just not going to like you.  No matter what you say or do, some people just won’t ever like you.  And that’s not on you.  That’s something to do with them. It’s who they are”. I’ve learned the truth of that statement as I have gotten older.

I’m getting too old to try to impress people. Either they like me the way I am, or they don’t. And that’s okay with me.

Don’t let somebody else’s opinion of you change who you are.  You are who you are because God made you that way.  And never forget that you are a child of God, wonderfully made.  Never apologize for being you.  That’s like saying you’re sorry for being real.

You are worthy.  You deserve the best and nobody has any say in that except you and God.  Don’t try to make people realize that you are worthy of their friendship or love.  If you have to do that, they are not worth your time.  Appreciation for someone should be a two-way street.  And if it isn’t, make some changes.  If someone doesn’t appreciate you for being real, genuine and authentic, they don’t deserve you.  Learn to walk away from people who show you little or no appreciation.

Life can be hard, but it’s even harder if you feel like you have to impress anyone. Let them see the real and authentic you and if they don’t want to be with the real and authentic you, there’s someone else out there for you. And that works both ways.

Always respect yourself and never let anyone disrespect you by making you feel unworthy or not good enough because you don’t fit into the mold that they want you to fit into.  Believe me, if you change yourself to please them, you will be changing yourself to please them throughout the relationship.

Be yourself and if others can’t deal with the genuine, real and authentic you, let them be.  You just keep on being you.

Sending you blessings of love and gratitude from Sterrett, Alabama!

I love these thoughts. For years I felt like I had to please everyone, but as I grew older I saw that was not the answer. I am who I am, I am who God made me to be.

    Thank You for your insight.

I heard very similar from my grandmother, but also my aunt, my mother and my grandfather. They took pride in having friends, but knew to never give in to their antics. The main thing they all said was to always respect yourself – show respect and walk away from indifferent people who always want to start “shit” or trouble or fight. They are trouble makers and not worth your time. Always be authentic, real… I have more to say . But, this article brought back so many fond memories growing up… Thank you for allowing us to respond.

Actually, I’m always like this!! I couldn’t care less what other people would say about me!! I do what I want!! I believe that for as long as I don’t step on other people’s shoes & I have the means to do what I want without bothering others, I would surely do it. And it would be for my own satisfaction, not to impress others. Even now that I am already in my mid 60s, I still love to wear makeup, nice clothes, bags, shoes, jewellery, perfume & go out socialise with friends!! I guess I’m just being me!! Heheheh😂😂

I would guess this applies to other races and religions (or non-religious like me). No point in banning Muslims, Buddhists, or others it would seem. Religion, especially Christianity in some forms, says we’re all evil because of a garden incident! Baloney!
