Respect Is Earned, Not Given

January 15, 2018 By Charity M. Richey-Bentley 25 Comments

Where has respect gone?  It seems to be a distant concept–something people did “back in the day”.  Families don’t seem to have respect among themselves and the way I hear children talk to their parents, parents don’t seem to teach it either.  What’s happened?  Children and young people do not seem to respect each other and show no respect toward the elderly and disabled.  Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like younger people do not have role models from which to learn respect.

When I was growing up, respecting my family, especially my mother and grandmother, was as natural as breathing.  I saw how my mother treated my grandmother and us four girls treated both mother and mama (our name for my grandmother) with the utmost respect and care.  We didn’t know it any other way.  And I just have to say that if I had ever treated either one of them with lack of respect, well, let’s just say you wouldn’t be reading this right now.  I’m smiling as I write this.  In all seriousness, we didn’t know another way.  We knew how to respect because we had good role models.  And that plays the largest role in how I treat others.

Treat people the way you want to be treated.  Talk to people the way you want to be talked to.  Respect is earned, not given. ~Unknown

Respect has to be earned, but one of the ways you earn it as a parent is making sure that your children know that they should at all times respect you.  And if they don’t, there should be serious consequences.  If you don’t insist that your child respect you, they will not learn to respect others.  And they will not learn to respect themselves.  It is give and take.  You give respect and you take it when given back to you.

As parents we should treat everyone, including our own children, with respect and care.  Our words, our voices, our tones should always be kind and respectful toward others.  Only when you give respect, do you receive it back.

Sending you blessings of love and kindness from Sterrett, Alabama!

AGREE with this article. The young people of today do not respect themselves let alone anyone else. When a young person opens a door for me, I say Thank You young man, lady. I get looks of shock. But I let them know I appreciate their thoughtfulness. It puts a smile on their face, and on mine.

It takes more energy to be disrespectful and angry , than to be kind and Noble . People should always be kind….

I completely agree about today’s children and I have 3 of my own and up to a little over a year now I was a single mom if 3. But i believe it’s not just because they have parents who are not positive role models, but also because their peers, authority figures, other adults, outside of the home and also computers, tv and games are also causes that create problems for the kids. As parents you can be the most positive, loving, caring and kind, teaching manners and respect ect but the minute they walk out the door they are faced with so much peer pressure and seeing children and adults be rude, disrespectful, bullying, unhelpfulness and being down right ugly human beings! I just took my oldest out of the school system because I realized no matter how well you teach your kids the right ways and teach them right from wrong they will always witness and go through otherwise in schools and elsewhere! Also if you have children who have no self confidence and who aren’t the popular group they will do and try anything to fit in and be liked! I mean the list of negatives out of the home are miles long and if the kid doesn’t have a positive household on top of what they are faced with at schools ect that is a recipe for disaster! I have always taught my kids manners, respect, to be helpful and caring and kind, right from wrong( heck for example, at the doctors today for one of my kids I wouldn’t let her get a sticker from the receptionist until she asked her politely please and thank you) but anyways like I was saying you can teach them possitive traits all life long but all it takes is one bad influence to turn them backwards never mind a whole school full!!

This days what i have learned that i respected so many is that i don’t get inside others room or their bag or either to search their wallets or smash they phone or poisoned someone food if they don’t see me. I just respect naturally even not respected.
