Mark your calendars! If you’re a sky watcher, a star gazer or a moon lover, you’re going to have a rare treat in January/February of 2018. Rare lunar events will mark the entry of 2018 as two super moons are set to shine on the first and last evening of January, with the finale expected to have an “extra special” red glow.
A super moon is a full moon that appears 14% larger and 30% brighter than the usual full moon. It appears when the moon orbits closest to Earth during its full phase. The first super moon of 2018 will take place on the night of January 1st or the morning of January 2nd, depending on your location. As if 1 super moon in one month weren’t enough, it is the 2nd super moon that will create all the buzz on the night of January 31st or the morning of February 1st, depending on your location.
A blue moon is the second full moon in a month, while a blood moon is seen when a full moon temporarily turns red during a total lunar eclipse.
A super blue blood moon is a “super moon”, a “blood moon” and a “blue moon” all happening in one night.
The January 31st super moon will feature a total lunar eclipse, with totality viewable from western North America across the Pacific to Eastern Asia.
Scientists are saying that “you almost feel as though you could reach out, grab the glowing orb, and drop it into your coffee cup”. I can’t wait to see it.
Mark your calendars and don’t miss it!
